In 1999, Chris O’Brien commenced his education in Law. While studying, Chris volunteered with Criminal Lawyer Nicolas Moir before commencing full-time employment with Mr Moir as a Law Graduate in 2003.

In 2004, Chris was admitted as a Solicitor and Barrister of the Supreme Court of New South Wales before being further admitted to practice in the High Court of Australia. For several years Chris was mentored by both Nicolas Moir and Paul Rosser QC in Criminal Law, where he has come to appear in all of the New South Wales Criminal Courts, including the New South Wales Supreme Court and the Court of Criminal Appeal.

Since 2006, Chris has volunteered his time to the University of Newcastle by assisting Moot Trials for potential Law Graduates and also donates his time to the Legal Center for legal advice sessions.

In 2007, Nicolas Moir, Chris O’Brien and Paul Rosser QC formed a Partnership known as Nicolas Moir and Associates Trading as Morelaw Solicitors and Barristers. 2007 was also the year that Chris became the convener of Lawyers for the Broadmeadow Traffic Offenders Program, at which he frequently lectures the programs legal topics. In early 2010, the Morelaw Partnership ended with both Nicolas Moir and Paul Rosser moving on to work independently as Barristers within the Newcastle Region. The Firm to this day, however, continues to associate with and instruct both Nicolas and Paul in their respective roles in the Criminal Justice System.

In January 2012, a new Partnership formed between the now Company Directors of the Firm Christopher O’Brien, Kristy Winter and Damien O’Brien. The Firm was thereafter known as O’Brien Winter Partners.

Kristy commenced her legal training when she was accepted to the University of New England to complete a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) and Bachelor of Law. On completion of her studies, Kristy received recognition by the Golden Key International Society for academic excellence to the top 15% of all undergraduate degrees across New South Wales.

Kristy went on to complete her Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice at the New South Wales College of Law and was admitted as a Practitioner of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in August 2009. Kristy was further admitted to the High Court of Australia in September 2009.

It was during the Practical Legal Training component of her Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice that Kristy first came into contact with Nicolas Moir and Associates. Kristy completed her legal training with Nicolas Moir and Associates in June 2009 and was offered a full-time position with the Firm.

Kristy has appeared regularly in all Criminal Courts since her admission including the Supreme Court of NSW and the Court of Criminal Appeal. Kristy has had extensive experience as an Advocate appearing in Local and District Courts throughout the Hunter and Sydney and regularly travels to instruct and appear in complex Criminal Trials throughout the State. Kristy has also expanded the Firm’s services to offer a Family Law sector.  Kristy became a Director of the now O’Brien Winter Partners in 2013 after completing the Practice Management Course and receiving her Unrestricted Practising Certificate.

Since 2012, Damien has volunteered his time to the University of Newcastle by assisting potential Law Graduates and further donates his time to the University Legal Centre for legal advice sessions.

Damien is passionate about delivering the best quality services to his clients and believes a client referral is the best measure of your service.

Prior to joining the O’Brien Winter Team, Damien gained extensive national and international commercial contract negotiations experience with the Accor Group, a global tourism and hospitality organisation based in Paris, France. During his time there, Damien developed and managed national, regional and global supply agreements aimed at improving supply conditions and optimising spending. The last position Damien held with the Accor Group was International Category Director IT based in Paris, France.

Prior to joining the Accor Group, Damien worked for Alcatel (now Alcatel Lucent), a global IT company, where he gained wide experience in marketing, procurement, account management and operations, and contract management.

Damien’s extensive experience in past areas of employment led him to pursue his now chosen field. Damien now practices in all areas of Commercial Law and Contract Negotiations, Residential, Commercial and Rural Conveyance and Estates.

After a period of time in the Accounting Sector where Kaylah gained valuable experience in all aspects of Taxation and Business Management, Kaylah was poached by the Firm’s Partners to take up the increasingly demanding position of Practice Manager.

Kaylah’s background in business management and extensive knowledge of marketing techniques made her the perfect addition to the growing Firm in need of a reliable, loyal and savvy person to manage all the financial and administrative aspects of the Firm. Kaylah was integral in the rebranding and implementation of the Firms name change and has ensured that all administrative, accounting and marketing aspects of the Firm have made a smooth transition during the successful change to the now O’Brien Winter Partners.

In 2013, Kaylah joined Christopher O’Brien, Damien O’Brien, Kristy Winter and Bradley Gabb in becoming a Partner/Shareholder of the Firm. Kaylah now manages all the day to day operations of the business including the management of all Financial, Marketing and Human Resource aspects.

In 2014, Kaylah was appointed as a Justice of the Peace and can further assist the Firm within this role.

Kaylah plans to undertake her Chartered Accountancy course next year whilst continuing to ensure the successful management and future growth of the Firm and its employees.

Donna is excited to continue her work with O’Brien Winter Partners, expanding her practice and continuing to provide clients with the highest standard of legal advice and representation.

Katie is thoroughly enjoying her time at O’Brien Winter Partners, particularly working alongside the Solicitors in the area of Criminal Law. Katie is responsible for the organisation and management of our Criminal and Family client files and ensures enquiries are effectively noted and passed on to the Solicitors on their return from Court. Katie is employed at O’Brien Winter Partners on a casual basis to allow her to complete her Bachelor of Arts/Laws undergraduate degree at the University of Newcastle. Prior to this, Katie began her Bachelor of Arts/Primary Teaching degree at Newcastle and completed it to her third year, before realising she wanted to pursue her keen interests in the field of Law.

Katie has two young children, aged 7 and 1. As part of our flexible arrangement, she also attends to work from home, assisting in emails and urgent enquiries.  It is expected that Katie will be complete her double degree in 2017 after which Katie hopes to have expertise in the Criminal Law Field and be admitted to the Bar as a Barrister sometime in the future.

In early 2014, Katie became a registered Justice of the Peace and is able to assist our clients in this role. Katie is very eager to finish her Law Degree and continue working with O’Brien Winter Partners in her future Legal career.

Jordan enjoys working for O’Brien Winter Partners and assisting the Criminal, Family and Commercial Solicitors whilst being responsible for the organisation and management of Client enquiries and initial conferences.

In addition to being employed with O’Brien Winter Partners on a full-time basis, Jordan is completing a Legal and Administrative course at Sydney TAFE. Jordan was also completing a Bachelor of Arts at the Newcastle University but deferred for a year to travel. Jordan’s Degree consisted of Sociology, Anthropology and Drama. Once this Degree is complete Jordan hopes to pursue her keen interest in Law by completing a Degree in this field.

In early 2017, Jordan became a registered Justice of the Peace and assists the Firm and our Clients in this role.
